You could magnify your illiteracy and also your mishearing.  You could hear someone say "ga beg" but they did say "good bye."  It happened in Kingston in 1974 when Bibbly Bare misheard someone during a telephone from England then she started saying "ga beg" to people in the bus station off Hope Road.
